Just In Time by maryshaw

Happy New Year! I hope you and yours had a healthy and happy holiday season. I’m back in the studio writing and recording again and wanted to catch you up on a few things.

Last year I took a film and TV songwriting course at Berklee. After many years of watching my guitars collect dust, I got excited about writing music again. At the same time I re-joined TAXI, a song-pitching service in L.A. I also did a few online concerts and got really psyched to write and record a new album. Then everything stopped.

Two things happened. First, I had to get a full time job, which I love. The economy finally caught up with me after working part time from home for almost five years. Then in August I was diagnosed with early stage breast cancer and had surgery in October. Thankfully my prognosis is excellent, with no need for chemo or radiation. I am very very lucky.

Surviving cancer has inspired me to refocus on what is most important to me: my health, my family and my music. In 2011 I learned a lot about taking care of the first two. Now it’s time to take care of the third.

In 2012 I intend to write, record and release one new song a week. This ambition is not an original idea at all, but I’m thrilled to give it a shot. It’s been very effective for my songwriting friends Ari Hest and Helen Austin, whose accomplishments have encouraged me to go for it. I’ve been saying for years that I wanted to get back to music for real, but then life happens and I put my guitars down. Life will continue to happen with or without my music, which is exactly why I should do this.

Not every song will be a keeper, but over time I expect to develop more than an album’s worth of new material and improve my writing and recording skills. So here’s my first new song of 2012. It’s called “Just In Time”. It’s a one-minute instrumental piece I’m pitching to a music library. Hope you enjoy it. Going forward I’ll be posting full-length songs, but felt this is a good way to get started. As always, thanks for listening :)

Mary…
WOW on two fronts. First, I had no idea what you just went through–thank goodness prognosis is so positive. Second, this song is amazing! I’m impressed! Best of luck with your goal! xo, Dana

Thanks Dana! Song #2 is almost ready to go and I’ll be posting it later this week. I had some unexpected mayhem this weekend that kept me out of the studio. This is gonna be tough to pull off with a family and a full time job, but I’m gonna keep at it!
